About The Role

The Principal Software Engineer at Red Hat is a senior technical contributor and strategic leader responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining core backend services. This role demands expertise in scalable distributed systems, high-performance API development, and robust data modeling. The successful candidate will lead efforts to integrate advanced AI capabilities, including Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI Agentic workflows, to drive automation and enhance product intelligence. As a key technical authority, you will mentor engineering teams, provide architectural guidance, and ensure all solutions adhere to Red Hat’s standards for security, privacy, and performance. Qualifications

• Mastery of Python and its ecosystem (e.g., FastAPI, Django, Flask)
• Extensive experience building and consuming RESTful and GraphQL APIs
• Deep knowledge of relational databases such as PostgreSQL and NoSQL solutions like Redis and MongoDB
• Hands-on experience with cloud-native technologies including Kubernetes, OpenShift, AWS, or Azure
• Practical experience integrating Large Language Models and building Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines
• Familiarity with creating AI Agents capable of task execution, tool usage, and state management
• Understanding of Machine Learning principles for collaboration with data science teams
• Proficiency in Git with advanced branching and merging strategies
• Proven leadership in Agile environments, including sprint planning and code reviews
• Strong commitment to data privacy and handling sensitive customer information ethically
• Basic knowledge of modern JavaScript frameworks, especially React, for backend-frontend integration

Responsibilities

• Design and implement highly scalable, resilient backend services using Python, following microservices architecture best practices
• Lead API strategy by designing and maintaining high-performance RESTful and GraphQL endpoints to support complex frontend and internal needs
• Architect and optimize database schemas, ensuring data integrity, performance, and efficient query execution for high-traffic applications
• Develop AI-driven features, focusing on LLM orchestration and Agentic workflows such as automated reasoning and tool integration
• Conduct performance audits and debugging across the entire stack, from databases to application logic, to ensure optimal system performance
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate coding, improve code quality, and streamline the software development lifecycle
• Collaborate with Product Managers to translate RFEs into detailed technical specifications and lead the implementation of complex features over multiple sprints
• Mentor engineering team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and best practices adherence
• Ensure all solutions comply with security standards, privacy laws, and internal policies, especially when handling sensitive data
