About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Software Engineer specializing in Airflow to join our engineering team. In this role, you will serve as a key technical leader responsible for architecting and driving the strategic evolution of our Apache Airflow-based workflow orchestration platform within Cloudera’s data ecosystem. Your expertise will be crucial in solving complex, high-impact technical challenges that span multiple teams and organizational boundaries. You will lead efforts to design scalable, secure, and reliable solutions for enterprise-grade workloads, ensuring our platform remains at the forefront of data orchestration technology. Collaborating with cross-functional teams including product management, platform engineers, and open-source communities, you will influence the future direction of our data platform and contribute to open-source projects, notably Apache Airflow. This role offers an exciting opportunity to shape the architecture of distributed systems, mentor engineering talent, and drive innovation in hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
• 6+ years of professional experience in software engineering
• Deep expertise in Apache Airflow internals, including scheduler, executor, serialization, and REST APIs
• Proficiency in Python and Java programming languages
• Experience with cloud-native deployments such as Kubernetes, AWS, GCP, or Azure
• Strong systems thinking with a focus on security, performance, high availability, and fault tolerance
• Proven leadership skills in driving technical projects across multiple teams without direct authority

Responsibilities

• Drive the multi-quarter technical roadmap and architecture for the Airflow platform, ensuring scalability, security, and reliability for enterprise workloads
• Design and implement solutions for complex technical challenges, including multi-tenancy, hybrid/multi-cloud deployment, and advanced scheduling
• Collaborate with product management, principal engineers, and other platform teams to define and deliver core orchestration capabilities that impact the entire data platform
• Establish and promote best practices, performance optimization, and quality standards for the Airflow service and its integrations
• Mentor and guide senior and junior engineers, fostering technical growth and excellence within the team
• Contribute to and influence the Apache Airflow open-source project, aligning its development with product strategy and organizational needs
• Participate in performance tuning, profiling large-scale distributed applications, and ensuring system robustness
