About The Role

We are seeking a highly experienced Backend Engineer to own and enhance the backend services and data pipelines powering our flagship product, Grader. Grader is Owner’s free restaurant health report that provides critical insights into online performance metrics such as website functionality, Google presence, menu quality, and more. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for ensuring the platform’s reliability, scalability, and resilience as we prepare for significant expansion and the integration of new AI-powered features.

Your primary focus will be to develop and maintain the backend infrastructure that ingests third-party signals from sources like Google, Yelp, and other data providers, processes this information asynchronously, and reliably serves results at scale. You will work closely with product, AI, and operations teams to establish robust platform foundations, reduce latency, increase uptime, and implement observability and alerting systems. This role offers the opportunity to shape the architecture of a critical product, setting the stage for future growth and innovation in AI-driven restaurant analytics.

This position is fully remote and open to candidates across the United States and Canada. The successful candidate will have a significant impact on the scalability and reliability of one of Owner’s most strategically important products, contributing to the broader mission of empowering local businesses through innovative technology.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience owning and operating backend services in production environments
• Proven expertise in building and managing data pipelines, third-party integrations, and asynchronous processing systems at scale
• Strong track record of improving system reliability through observability, alerting, incident reduction, and operational best practices
• Experience working in product-focused startups or scale-ups, with end-to-end system ownership
• Exceptional collaboration skills, with a history of working effectively with cross-functional teams including product, design, and business stakeholders
• High level of ownership, proactive problem-solving, and excellent communication skills
• Deep understanding of scalable architecture, backend development, and system resilience

Responsibilities

• Own the backend services and data pipelines that power Grader, from data ingestion to result delivery
• Ensure platform resilience by reducing latency, increasing uptime, and implementing robust observability and alerting systems
• Develop and refine shared abstractions, operational runbooks, and architectural patterns to streamline development and maintenance
• Collaborate closely with product, AI, and engineering teams to evolve Grader into a broader AI-powered tool for restaurant owners
• Harden the platform in preparation for future expansion, ensuring it can handle increased scale and new scoring dimensions
• Identify and resolve operational issues proactively, contributing to a reliable and efficient platform environment
• Document platform architecture, operational procedures, and best practices to support team growth and onboarding
