Overview
The Maintenance Helper / Apprentice supports the Maintenance / Chemical Handler in the day-to-day operation and upkeep of the facility. This role is responsible for custodial duties, routine maintenance tasks, and lower-priority work orders/repairs. This is an entry-level position with a structured path toward full Maintenance / Chemical Handler responsibilities over time.
Purpose of This Role
The volume of maintenance, custodial, and facility upkeep work at this facility exceeds what a single technician can manage while also responding to critical equipment failures and chemical system needs. The Maintenance Helper / Apprentice is specifically created to absorb routine and lower-priority work so that the Maintenance Technician’s time and skills are protected for work that requires their expertise.
Responsibilities
The Maintenance Helper / Apprentice is responsible for:
Custodial & Housekeeping
· Perform daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning of all facility areas including production floor, restrooms, break areas, locker rooms, and office spaces.
· Empty and manage waste receptacles throughout the facility.
· Maintain cleanliness of chemical storage and hazardous waste staging areas in support of the Maintenance Technician.
· Sweep, mop, and wash floors and work areas as assigned.
· Maintain organization of the maintenance shop, tool storage, and supply areas.
Routine Maintenance & Work Orders
· Complete routine, low-complexity work orders as assigned by the Maintenance Technician or Operations Manager.
· Assist the Maintenance Technician with repairs, preventive maintenance tasks, and equipment servicing under direct supervision.
· Perform basic facility upkeep including replacing light bulbs, filters, and other consumable components as directed.
· Assist with moving, staging, and organizing equipment, materials, and supplies throughout the facility.
· Assist with lawn care and grounds maintenance as assigned.
· Perform painting, patching, and minor facility repair work as directed.
Chemical Handling Support
· Assist the Maintenance Technician with transporting, staging, and organizing chemical deliveries under direct supervision and per established procedures.
· Assist with labeling and storage of chemicals and hazardous materials as directed and in compliance with all regulatory requirements.
· Never handle, open, or transfer process chemicals independently without training and authorization from the Maintenance Technician or Operations Manager.
General
· Report any observed equipment damage, unsafe conditions, or facility issues to the Maintenance Technician or Operations Manager immediately.
· Assist other departments with tasks as directed by the Operations Manager.
· Actively participate in on-the-job learning and work toward developing the skills required for the full Maintenance / Chemical Handler role.
Scope Limitations
The following tasks are outside the scope of this role until the employee has received specific training and been explicitly authorized by the Operations Manager:
· Independent operation or adjustment of wastewater pH control equipment.
· Independent chemical additions to process baths or tanks.
· Major electrical repairs.
· Boiler operation or maintenance.
· Hazardous waste labeling and manifest completion.
· Any repair or maintenance task involving process chemicals without direct supervision.
Training Provided
Management will assess the individual’s background, skills, and experience to determine current and future training requirements. The Maintenance Helper / Apprentice will be trained in:
· Safety and personal protective equipment (PPE) associated with this position.
· Federal “Right to Know” regulations.
· The Quality Policy statement and its intent.
· Work Procedures as specified in the QMS Training Matrix.
· Forklift operator certification.
· Hazardous waste handling and storage procedures (introductory level).
· Chemical identification, labeling, and SDS familiarization.
· Facility equipment identification and general maintenance awareness.
Development Path
This role is structured as a learning position. Over time, and based on demonstrated performance, reliability, and skill development, the Maintenance Helper / Apprentice will be progressively introduced to higher-level tasks including chemical handling, wastewater system operation, and preventive maintenance execution.
Education, Knowledge, and Skills Requirements
· Ability to speak, read, write, and understand the English language.
· Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds.
· Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn hands-on trades skills.
· Reliability, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic.
· Ability to follow instructions and work safely around industrial equipment and chemicals.
· Prior experience in a manufacturing, facilities, or maintenance environment is a plus but not required.
Work Environment
This position operates in a manufacturing and metal-finishing environment. The role involves exposure to industrial chemicals, process equipment, and facility systems. PPE including gloves, safety glasses, face shield, and hearing protection is required in designated areas. The employee must be comfortable working in a physically demanding industrial environment.
Position Type & Schedule
Full-time position.
Monday–Thursday, 5:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Friday, 5:30 a.m.–9:30 a.m. Overtime as needed.
Reports To
Maintenance / Chemical Handler and Operations Manager.
Pay: $18.00 – $21.00 per hour
