Purge Environmental is a fast-growing, locally owned septic, grease, and wastewater service company proudly serving Central and Eastern Indiana. We provide essential septic pumping, sewer services, grease trap cleaning, system inspections, and wastewater solutions to residential and commercial customers. Our team is built on reliability, accountability, and a commitment to doing the job right.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced, self-motivated Septic, Sewer, & Grease Systems Technician to join Purge Environmental as a key field team member and the foundation of our newly developing repair and excavation division. This is not a helper or trainee position — we are looking for someone with real, verifiable field experience who can step in, take ownership of a job site, and operate with minimal supervision from day one. This role works directly alongside company ownership to build out our repair, assessment, and installation capabilities. If you are a skilled tradesperson who takes pride in quality workmanship, thrives in a hands-on environment, and is looking for a position with genuine growth potential and the opportunity to eventually run your own division — we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
· Conduct comprehensive septic system assessments, stress tests, and field inspections on residential and commercial properties.
· Diagnose system failures including drain field dysfunction, baffle deterioration, distribution box failure, and tank structural issues.
· Perform hands-on repairs to tanks, inlet and outlet baffles, distribution boxes, lateral lines, and related components.
· Operate excavation equipment including mini-excavators, skid steers, and hand tools to access and expose system components.
· Install new septic systems and drain fields under Indiana health department permits and in compliance with all applicable codes.
· Perform drain field rehabilitation treatments and soil restoration services.
· Locate, probe, and accurately map existing system components including tanks, distribution boxes, and lateral lines.
· Coordinate with surrounding county health departments on permits, inspections, and compliance requirements.
· Communicate findings, repair options, and recommendations clearly and professionally to customers on-site.
· Document all work thoroughly with photographs, written service reports, and job records.
· Maintain equipment, tools, and assigned vehicles in clean, safe, and operational condition.
· Respond to emergency service and repair calls as needed during and outside of standard business hours.
· Assist in training and mentoring additional field staff as the repair division grows.
· Represent Purge Environmental with professionalism, integrity, and a strong customer service mindset at every job site.
Required Skills & Qualifications
· Minimum 2–3 years of verifiable, hands-on experience in septic system repair, installation, or inspection — this is a firm requirement.
· Demonstrated excavation experience; ability to safely and competently operate a mini-excavator or similar equipment is strongly preferred.
· Solid working knowledge of how septic systems function from the tank through the soil treatment area, including component identification and failure diagnosis.
· Ability to identify and diagnose system failures including hydraulic overload, biomat formation, baffle failure, drain field collapse, and distribution box issues.
· Prior experience working with county or state health departments on septic permits, inspections, or system approvals.
· Indiana septic installer or inspector certification preferred; candidates without current certification must be willing and committed to obtaining it.
· Ability to read and interpret site plans, system layouts, and county permit records.
· Strong mechanical aptitude and proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and field diagnostics equipment.
· Ability to lift 50+ lbs. repeatedly and perform physically demanding manual labor throughout the workday in all weather conditions.
· Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required; CDL a plus.
· Strong verbal communication skills — you will interact directly with homeowners and property owners on every job.
· Self-directed, dependable, and capable of managing a job site independently from start to finish.
· Professional appearance and conduct — you are the face of Purge Environmental in the field.
· Background in plumbing, civil construction, underground utilities, or related trades is highly beneficial.
· Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening.
· Must be located in or able to reliably commute to the Central Indiana area.
Prior Experience Requirements
Due to the nature and demands of this role, prior service experience in the following areas is required. Candidates who cannot demonstrate hands-on field experience in at least several of the areas listed below will not be considered for this position.

· Distribution box inspection, repair, or replacement.
· Excavation work — operating machinery and performing hand excavation in residential or commercial settings.
· Septic system inspection — conducting assessments, stress tests, and producing written findings.
· Working knowledge of Indiana health department septic regulations and permitting processes is strongly preferred.
Work Schedule
· Monday through Friday, standard daytime hours.
· Occasional evening or weekend availability required for emergency repair calls.
· Full-time position; consistent, reliable availability is expected.
