Team Summary:
The Mori Food R&D team supports a breadth of studies in support of application development, both in house and with external partners. This is an exciting time at Mori to contribute to fundamental research from the ground-up, learn about a range of mechanisms, gain experience with evaluation methods relevant to many food categories, and problem-solve novel techniques in a startup environment.
The R&D team is led by experienced scientists that operate cross-functionally and partner with customers as-needed to further Mori’s technical work.
Position Summary:
This is an entry level position responsible for day-to-day execution of tasks in support of a range of Food R&D projects, including sample preparation, data collection and entry, and lab and instrument management. Daily work involves the routine and repetitive use of various types of lab equipment and software programs to perform tests, record data or findings, and present information.
The ideal candidate is detail and process oriented, organized and able to multi-task, analytically curious and data-driven. They have good time management, strong communication, and a can-do attitude to jump in as-needed. They are a collaborative team player and adaptable to a dynamic setting. They are coachable and able to work independently once priorities, processes, and plans are aligned with stakeholders and their manager.
This role reports into a Senior Scientist on the Food R&D team. It is in-person in our Charlestown, MA lab from Monday-Friday, but may adapt schedules for project needs with total expected hours of 40 per week.
Responsibilities:
Study execution:
o Prepare product samples for use in R&D studies
o Monitor study time points and document observations
o Assist or drive routine data collection on trained methodologies and instruments
o Capture relevant visuals to share with external partner
o Clearly communicate project status and work plan on a daily basis
o Proactively communicate challenges and relevant observations findings in a timely manner to enable efficient troubleshooting and study pivoting
Data analysis:
o Record, verify, standardize, clean, and help interpret data from study results
o Assist in data presentation and technical updates
o Research and documentation
o Assist in literature reviews and methodology research to support study design and data interpretation
o Synthesize desktop research for cross-functional communication and ongoing application development
o Document novel methodologies, formulations, workflows, etc. into clear and detailed SOPs
o Maintain clean lab notebooks and digital infrastructure (e.g., R&D files and folders on Sharepoint)
Instrument and equipment management:
o Help or independently set up laboratory equipment and instrumentation required for a range of testing methods
o Utilize problem solving skills to troubleshoot instruments and identify the need for recalibration or servicing
Lab management:
o Maintain inventory and restock when needed
o Maintain cleanliness at assigned station(s)
Other:
o Execute other job-related duties and techniques as assigned
o Comply with all established safety, health, and environmental rules and regulations to ensure a safe and food safe work environment
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s preferred in food science, engineering, biomaterials, materials science, chemistry, or biology. Associate’s with sufficient lab training sufficient.
Must-Have Skills:
o Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
o Ability to follow and execute based on both written and verbal direction
o Clear and complete communication
o Ability to conduct calculations for study design and analysis
o Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changing priorities to stay on schedule
o Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite
o General lab skills
Preferred Skills:
o Strong ability to interpret and conduct foundational studies and statistical methodologies
o Exposure to texture analyzer, calorimetry, OTVR, WTVR techniques
o Exposure to preventative maintenance of equipment
o Experience in the food and beverage industry
