Role Summary:
Seagate Space is a ventured capital-backed startup delivering next-generation maritime infrastructure for the space industry. Our Gateway series is the first-ever ABS approved (AIP) offshore platform designed to deliver the precision stability and motion control required for dynamic launch operations at sea. Based at spARK Labs in St. Petersburg (Florida), joining Seagate Space will put you at the center of two sectors: the dynamic expanse of space and the reemergence of maritime innovation.
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to support the development, testing, and documentation of platform mechanical systems (power and propulsion systems, launch strongbacks, platform modules etc.). This internship offers hands-on experience across mechanical design, prototyping, equipment integration, and system-level validation.
This is a unique opportunity for a student passionate about applying mechanical engineering fundamentals to real-world maritime and aerospace challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
Preliminary Design & Technical Support
• Assist in developing preliminary mechanical layouts for platform equipment, including handling systems, launch-support mechanisms, machinery foundations, and modular containerized systems.
• Support 3D modeling and drafting of brackets, mounts, housings, small assemblies, and interface components.
• Contribute to concept development for power and propulsion systems, mechanical systems foundations, and installation kits.
• Support engineering calculations involving power and propulsion systems, loads, materials, thermal considerations, and mechanical tolerances.
Testing, Analysis & Validation
• Assist in preparing FEA models and post-processing results under supervision.
• Participate in equipment integration planning and test setup documentation.
• Record test data, support performance evaluation, and assist with failure analysis when needed.
• Help prepare system diagrams and documentation for mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic arrangements.
Documentation & Engineering Support
• Prepare mechanical drawings, assembly instructions, and bills-of-materials for prototype and production configurations.
• Support development of contract-level documentation such as arrangements, equipment lists, and mechanical schedules.
• Assist with compliance documentation and safety reviews for mechanical systems.
• Participate in design reviews, capturing notes and updating action items.
Qualifications:
Required
• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Coursework or project experience involving CAD modeling (SolidWorks, Rhino, Inventor, or similar).
• Basic understanding of mechanical design principles, power and propulsion systems, materials, and load paths.
• Strong attention to detail, organization, and documentation skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced engineering environment.
• U.S. citizenship (ITAR requirement).
Preferred
• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline with structural emphasis.
• Proficiency in 3D design tools (Rhino, SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
• Experience with prototyping, machining, power and propulsion systems or hardware in the loop testing.
• Familiarity with FEA tools or simulation software.
• High interest in offshore systems, robotics, launch equipment, or modular structures.
• Experience working with mechanical assemblies or system-level integration.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics.
• Familiarity with FEA tools and offshore platform structures.
• Experience with ABS or USCG regulatory frameworks.
• Interest in spaceport infrastructure and launch systems.
Compensation:
This role offers a balanced compensation package that includes both a competitive salary and meaningful stock-based equity (commensurate with experience). While salaries reflect the dynamics of an early-stage startup, our equity grants provide significant long-term upside and align your success with the company’s growth. We aim to ensure that total compensation is competitive in aggregate, rewarding both immediate contributions and long-term impact.
Hourly rate: Competitive and aligned with engineering intern market rates.
Opportunities for continued internship or full-time employment based on performance.
Equity: May have the opportunity to participate in Seagate’s equity program.
Our Core Values:
To fulfill our mission, Seagate Space must develop a DNA that is distinct from incumbents in the maritime industry – one that focuses on agility, innovation, and collaboration.
These 5 Principles guide our ways of working from day one and onwards as we evolve.
1. Move at the Speed of Our Customers – Stay nimble and avoid bureaucracy to match the pace of the space industry.
2. Make No Small Plans – Focus on bold, transformative developments over incremental improvements.
3. Collaboration Wins the Day – Seek win–win partnerships; going solo is a last resort.
4. Rules are Meant to Be Rewritten – Challenge norms to drive innovation.
5. Ask More, Say More – Encourage open, inquisitive dialogue to advance collective knowledge
