Role Description

We are seeking a full-time, on-site Senior Nonprofit Accountant to join our team in Houston, TX with strong experience in grant accounting, payroll allocation, audit preparation, and nonprofit compliance. This is a hands‑on, senior individual‑contributor role responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring grant compliance, and supporting organizational leadership with reliable financial information. Responsibilities include preparing and analyzing financial statements, managing grants and fund accounting, reconciling accounts, and coordinating audits. You will collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders, providing strategic financial insights to support decision-making. You will also serve as the primary point of contact for auditors for routine requests, and assist with responding to audit questions and implementing recommendations.

Qualifications

• Proficiency in nonprofit accounting, financial reporting, and grant management
• Strong skills in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
• Knowledge of accounting software, such as MIP or similar tools
• Expertise in compliance with nonprofit standards and IRS regulations
• Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and attention to detail
• Ability to communicate financial information to diverse audiences effectively
• Maintain documented cost allocation methodologies for shared expenses
• Allocate payroll, fringe, and administrative costs across grants and programs
• Ensure allocation methods are consistently applied and audit‑ready
• Manage month‑end close, reconciliations, and journal entries
• Oversee accounts payable and receivable
• Maintain general ledger accuracy and supporting documentation
• Assist with budgeting and budget‑to‑actual analysis as needed
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field
• CPA or similar certification is strongly preferred
• Minimum of 6 years of accounting experience, with at least 4 years in a nonprofit setting
• Experience with multi-grant reporting is a plus
