About The Role

As a Software Engineer within the Reasoning Foundations Team at Waymo, you will play a crucial role in building and maintaining the horizontal technologies that have a broad impact across the organization. Your primary focus will be on the Driving Logic Capabilities, developing interfaces, infrastructure, and shared technologies used by the Planner Reasoning module to solve behavioral problems onboard the vehicle. This hybrid role reports to a Lead Software Engineer and offers the opportunity to directly influence the performance and scalability of the Waymo Driver as it expands into new markets. You will collaborate with over 100 engineers, enhancing onboard software development workflows, evolving system architecture, and establishing clear interfaces and debugging processes to support continuous improvement and innovation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
• 3+ years of professional Software Engineering experience
• Proficiency in C++ programming language
• Strong understanding of operating systems concepts including memory management, concurrency, and scheduling
• Passion for engineering high-performance, reliable systems, with a focus on interface design and infrastructure development
• Experience in robotics or related domains is preferred
• Knowledge of real-time, highly reliable system design is a plus
• Ability to solve ambiguous problems at the intersection of technology and product development

Responsibilities

• Own and enhance the onboard infrastructure used by a large engineering organization to improve the Waymo Driver
• Enable efficient workflows across the full development cycle, from problem identification to tooling iteration and regression monitoring
• Develop and evolve onboard architecture, creating high-quality interfaces that support system scalability
• Take ownership of foundational reasoning data structures, leveraging robotics and computational geometry expertise
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement solutions that improve system performance and reliability
• Establish development processes and debugging workflows to streamline onboard software development
