About The Role

We are seeking passionate and talented Junior Engineers to join our Ubuntu Engineering organization. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to one of the most prolific open source projects in the world. As a Junior Engineer at Canonical, you will work across various teams involved in maintaining and enhancing Ubuntu, including Foundations, Server, Desktop, and Debcrafters. Your responsibilities will encompass designing, developing, packaging, testing, and shipping software that powers millions of devices worldwide. You will engage with open source communities, contribute to upstream projects, and collaborate with a globally distributed team to deliver innovative solutions. This role is ideal for individuals eager to build their careers in open source, gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies, and make a meaningful impact in the open source ecosystem.

Qualifications

• Exceptional academic record from high school and university or an alternative demonstrated pathway
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, STEM field, or equivalent experience
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, or C/C++
• Strong interest and passion for open source software development
• Professional proficiency in written and spoken English
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work effectively in a remote, distributed team environment
• Willingness to travel up to twice a year for company events

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and ship new foundational systems software and applications
• Package, integrate, test, and upload open source software to Ubuntu repositories
• Debug issues and develop robust, scalable solutions
• Author and improve technical documentation for community and internal use
• Contribute to upstream open source projects and collaborate with external communities
• Participate in code reviews, team meetings, and technical discussions
• Continuously learn new skills and stay updated with industry best practices
• Support automation efforts related to building, testing, and deploying Ubuntu
