Job Summary
Beacon, Inc. is seeking a dedicated and energetic shelter monitor for our overnight shelter, A Friend’s Place. The shelter monitor is responsible for overseeing the safety, security, and well-being of clients during their shifts. This full-time role offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact by providing compassionate supervision, crisis intervention, and support services to individuals experiencing homelessness. The ideal candidate will be proactive, communicative, and committed to fostering a safe and respectful environment for all shelter guests.

A Friend’s Place is open seven days a week from 5pm to 8am. Applicants with availability for both the 5pm to 12:30am and the 12:30am to 8am shifts, as well as weekends, preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Monitor shelter operations and 40+ clients, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for residents and staff
• Conduct intake procedures for new guests, including interviews and paperwork
• Update client attendance records and nightly reports
• Provide crisis intervention and conflict management to de-escalate tense situations effectively
• Monitor the property overnight using regular rounds and security cameras
• Provide wake up calls and secure the building after guests have left
• Maintain accurate data entry, filing, and data collection related to client information and incidents on property
• Enforce shelter policies, security protocols, and safety procedures to prevent incidents or unauthorized access
• Basic cleaning, laundry, supply stocking and donation sorting as needed
• Communicate with other area agencies and first responders when needed
• Provide clients with information about other area resources

Requirements

• Prior experience in social services, behavioral health, or related fields preferred
• Passion for helping others
• An ability to set clear limits and boundaries with kindness
• Strong communication skills for effective interaction with clients, staff, and emergency responders
• Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and conflict management strategies, training provided
• Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism and compassion
• Basic first aid & CPR training is a plus, mandatory certification training provided
• Familiarity with area resources and housing program options is beneficial
• Skills in data entry, filing, intake procedures, and strong computer skills
• Ability to prioritize duties and effectively manage chaotic situations
• Comfortable working as part of a team and alone, with and without onsite supervision

A degree in a social service or related field, and prior experience with marginalized populations will be highly valued but not required. Lived experience is a plus!

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

• Occasional moving of objects up to 50 pounds
• Moving about to accomplish tasks and moving from one workstation to another
