Department of the Jail Deputy Director Full Time

coordination and supervision of units and sections engaged in inmate detention,

supervision, and support (i.e.: Training, Personnel, etc.). Assistant to the Jail Director,

fulfilling management and special staff responsibilities. This position directly supervises

the Captains of the Support Services Division, Security Operations Division, and the

Contract Monitor.

Assists the Jail Director in the administrative planning, organization, and coordination of

the units and sections comprising the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) Department

of the Jail (DOJ). Duties include the development and execution ofpolicies and procedures,

planning of long-term and short-term goals and programs, and providing significant input

regarding the feasibility of improvements on a department-wide basis. Requires the

exercise of mature judgment and application of knowledge of the department’s function,

structural organization, contracts, programs, policies and procedures, as well as good

working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws. Allows broad operational

independence within the framework of established policies, procedures, pertinent laws, and

ordinances.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Jail Director. Work is evaluated through

observation, conferences, results obtained, oral/written reports, and appropriate employee

performance appraisals.Oversees day-to-day operations of the detention facility

• Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, accreditation standards, and

agency policies

• Support the development and implementation of operational policies, procedures,

and best practices

• Monitor facility safety, security protocols, and inmate management processes
• Assist with personnel management, including scheduling, training, performance

management, and professional development

• Provides leadership, guidance, and support to staff and supervisors
• Support budget planning, operational reporting, and administrative functions
• Foster collaboration with internal divisions and external partner agencies
• Develop and set priorities in cooperation with the Jail Director or higher authority;

review the effectiveness of supervised programs on an ongoing basis; provide

policy direction and guidance to subordinates in the accomplishment of

departmental goals

• Communicate policies and priorities of the Jail Director or higher authority to key

staff, other law enforcement agencies, community groups, and other units of

government; assist staff in developing appropriate responses to problems

encountered

• Coordinate staff and resources to achieve objectives in resource allocation and

make necessary adjustments; generate new program ideas and implements them

upon approval of the Jail Director or higher authority

• Assist in the coordination of budget preparation for annual budget request;

continually review the fiscal impact of all departmental expenditures on the

Sheriffs Office budget

• Routinely complete tours/inspections of the facility as directed by the Jail Director

or higher authority

• Maintain contact with community organizations and make presentations as

requested; attend related departmental and social functions

• Maintain currency in related legislation at the state and local level; review and

comment on documents, issues, and department-wide concerns to the Jail Director

or higher authority in oral and written form

Educational Requirements

Preferred Major(s): Corrections, Law Enforcement, Business Admin, or other

related field

• Preferred fifteen (15) years of progressive correctional experience, with at least five (5) or more years of administrative and management experience, two (2) of which must be as a senior manager or higher of comparable organization
• A Master’s degree in an associated field may substitute for 1 (one) year of experience

Experience And Training

• Must meet or exceed all applicable physical agility standards required by ACSO
• Experienced in correctional operations, staff supervision, and operational

oversight.

• Experience in managing a large, secure detention facility, greater than 600 inmates
• Experience preparing for and participating in jail inspections, such as Florida

Model Jail Standards (FMJS) Inspections, facility audits, and accreditation reviews

ensuring compliance with standards

• Experience coordinating with external stakeholders, including courts, law

enforcement agencies, community partners, and service providers

• Experience with body-worn camera systems in a correctional setting, including

policy implementation, program oversight, and ensuring compliance with recording

and retention requirements

• Experience supporting or implementing re-entry programming and initiatives

designed to reduce recidivism and support successful reintegration into the

community

• Experience in working with or supporting inmate mental-health programming,

behavioral health services, and partnerships that address the needs of justiceimpacted

individuals in need of mental health services

• Experience overseeing or working with jail volunteer programs that incorporate

justice-impacted individuals serving in volunteer roles

• Experience overseeing advanced educational initiatives for justice-impacted

individuals, specifically utilizing touch screen tablets as a delivery method

Certification And Licensing

Florida Correction Certification

Current, valid Florida driver license

and/or the Sheriff

• Knowledge and understanding of the attitudes and behavioral patterns of inmates

under custody

• Skilled in developing long/short-term plans and programs and evaluating their

progress

• Skilled in directing and managing diverse programs and groups of people
• Skilled in developing and training subordinate staff to enhance their personal and

organizational objectives

• Ability to lead in a complex and dynamic corrections environment
• Ability to develop managerial, operational, and budgetary plans in response to

organizational needs and changes

• Ability to plan, assign and direct the work of administrative and supervisory

personnel
