Job Title: Construction Materials Technician / Special InspectorJob Description
This role offers an opportunity to grow your career as an Engineering Field Technician with a focus on construction materials testing and special inspections. You will support geotechnical and construction services projects in the Triad market by performing field and laboratory testing on soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates. The position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work in the field, wants to develop technical inspection skills, and is motivated to contribute to the growth and reputation of a developing engineering office.
Responsibilities
Travel to active construction sites in the Triad area to perform field inspections and materials testing.
Collect samples of soils, concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and other construction materials from job sites in accordance with project requirements and testing standards.
Perform field testing of construction materials, including concrete and soils, when appropriate based on sample size, quantity, and project needs.
Transport collected materials to the office or laboratory for additional testing and analysis when field testing is not sufficient or practical.
Conduct laboratory testing on concrete, soil, aggregates, and asphalt using established procedures and industry standards.
Perform soil inspections, concrete inspections, masonry inspections, and asphalt inspections as required for each project.
Document test results and inspection findings clearly and accurately, and assist in preparing written reports.
Read and interpret project documentation and testing requirements to ensure that all work complies with applicable specifications and standards.
Communicate effectively with project team members, site personnel, and office staff to coordinate testing activities and report findings.
Work independently in the field once trained, managing daily schedules and assigned job sites responsibly.
Follow safety procedures on job sites and while driving between locations, maintaining a high level of professionalism and attention to detail.
Essential Skills
Ability to perform field and laboratory testing of concrete, soil, aggregates, and asphalt.
Experience or strong comfort with hands-on, outdoor, and field-based work such as landscaping, farming, construction labor, or field service roles.
High attention to detail when collecting samples, performing tests, and recording data.
Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with team members and prepare clear reports.
Ability to read and write reports and document test results accurately.
Ability to work independently in the field once trained and to manage daily tasks with minimal supervision.
Willingness to submit to an MVR (motor vehicle record) check to qualify for use of a company vehicle.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
ACI (American Concrete Institute) certification is preferred.
ICC certifications are a plus.
Experience with soil inspections, concrete inspections, masonry inspections, and asphalt inspections is beneficial.
Experience with concrete testing and soil testing is advantageous.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a variety of field and office personnel.
Work Environment
This role is primarily field-based, with a very large majority of the work performed outdoors on active construction sites that are typically in the early stages of the building process. During the first few months, you will ride with a team member to job sites for training and onboarding. Once you are up to speed, you will be assigned a company truck to drive independently to various project locations and to the shop or laboratory as needed. The environment involves frequent driving between job sites, exposure to changing weather conditions, and regular interaction with construction teams and office staff. Work is hands-on and physically active, focusing on testing and inspecting construction materials in real-world site conditions.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Raleigh, NC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 – $25.00/hr.
