The State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health (DPH), State Public Health Laboratory, is excited to announce an internal promotional opportunity for the position of Assistant Supervisor of Scientific Support Services. This role is essential to supporting the Laboratory’s daily operational readiness and high-quality public health services. Please note: This opportunity is open only to current DPH employees.

About The Position
The State Public Health Laboratory conducts a wide range of testing essential to protecting the health and safety of Connecticut residents. Areas include antibiotic susceptibility testing; biological and chemical threat agent detection; emerging pathogens; environmental water testing for lead, chemicals, and bacteria; foodborne outbreak investigations; Newborn Screening; rabies; radon; sexually transmitted diseases; tuberculosis; and viruses such as COVID‑19, MPOX, and influenza.
The Assistant Supervisor Of Scientific Support Services Will
This role requires an energetic, organized, and adaptable individual who can ensure accurate inventory management and smooth support operations across the Laboratory.

Selection Plan

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Public Health Laboratory this class is accountable for assisting in the supervision of the Scientific Supportive Services section.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience
Five (5) years of experience in a health, academic or diagnostic laboratory including experience in washing and sterilization of glassware, culture media preparation, and preparation and mailing of laboratory specimen containers.
Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at the level of Laboratory Assistant 2 or above.
Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed
College training in the biological or physical sciences may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor’s degree.
Preferred Qualifications
WORKING CONDITIONS
May occasionally be required to lift standard laboratory equipment and/or trays/boxes of glassware; may be exposed to some risk of injury from such hazards as rabid animals, broken glass, toxic vapors, and toxic and/or disease-carrying substances; may be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions.
