EHS Specialist (Industrial Hygiene Focus)
Job Description
This role provides hands-on industrial hygiene and comprehensive health, safety, and environmental support for a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Kansas City during a nine-month decommissioning and production support period. The HSE Specialist focuses primarily on industrial hygiene monitoring during production, while also supporting daily safety activities, contractor safety management, and regulatory compliance across the site. You will collaborate closely with the Site HSE Advisor, project stakeholders, leadership, supervisors, and contractors to maintain a safe, compliant, and efficient operating environment.
Responsibilities
Perform air monitoring of employees during production activities to assess exposure levels and verify compliance with industrial hygiene standards.
Conduct periodic employee industrial hygiene monitoring during standard production hours, typically between 4:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., with flexibility of approximately one hour as needed.
Calibrate industrial hygiene equipment, perform sampling, and manage the preparation and shipment of samples in accordance with established procedures.
Conduct environmental and personal exposure sampling in support of industrial hygiene programs and regulatory requirements.
Adjust work hours as needed to align with production schedules and specific monitoring requirements.
Support daily task planning and hazard recognition activities to proactively identify and control risks.
Conduct job site observations to verify compliance with approved safety plans, standard operating procedures, and site HSE requirements.
Ensure appropriate controls are in place for high-risk activities prior to work commencement and verify that these controls remain effective.
Participate in Gemba walks with project stakeholders to identify safety concerns, recommend corrective actions, and follow up on resolution.
Provide guidance and interpretation of local, state, and federal safety regulations, including OSHA requirements, to site personnel and contractors.
Support environmental health and safety initiatives as needed, including activities related to decommissioning and ongoing production.
Support contractor safety processes for the decommissioning project, including review of work activities and verification of adherence to site safety expectations.
Ensure contractor activities align with site standards, safety procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
Interface with production, operations, and leadership teams to address safety issues, communicate findings, and drive continuous improvement in HSE performance.
Essential Skills
Industrial hygiene experience in a manufacturing environment, including exposure monitoring and sampling.
Minimum of 5 years of manufacturing safety experience, preferably in an HSE or EHS role.
Strong working knowledge of OSHA and applicable safety regulations, with the ability to interpret and apply requirements in an operational setting.
Demonstrated experience with general health and safety practices, including hazard recognition, risk control, and compliance verification.
Ability to work flexible hours and adjust schedule based on production needs and monitoring requirements.
Medical clearance for respiratory protection to safely perform monitoring and related activities.
Valid driver’s license and willingness to drive between two sites as needed for monitoring and safety support.
Proficiency in supporting compliance with cGMP and handling hazardous materials in a controlled manufacturing environment.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with site leadership, supervisors, contractors, and project stakeholders.
Ability to work independently in the field, manage multiple priorities, and maintain accurate records of monitoring and safety activities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in pharmaceutical, animal health, food, or fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturing environments.
Experience as an Industrial Hygienist or Industrial Hygiene Technician; part-time industrial hygiene experience is acceptable.
Experience supporting environmental sampling programs, including environmental monitoring and documentation.
Current First Aid and CPR certification or willingness to obtain it within a defined timeframe.
Familiarity with contractor safety management processes during decommissioning or construction projects.
Experience participating in or leading Gemba walks or similar continuous improvement activities.
Ability to interpret and apply site safety standards, procedures, and best practices in a practical, operations-focused manner.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $40.00 – $60.00/hr.
