About The Position

The State Public Health Laboratory conducts a wide range of testing essential to protecting the health and safety of Connecticut residents. Areas include antibiotic susceptibility testing; biological and chemical threat agent detection; emerging pathogens; environmental water testing for lead, chemicals, and bacteria; foodborne outbreak investigations; Newborn Screening; rabies; radon; sexually transmitted diseases; tuberculosis; and viruses such as COVID‑19, MPOX, and influenza.

The Assistant Supervisor Of Scientific Support Services Will

• Oversee daily operations of the Central Stores section
• Manage requisition entry, product receipt, and delivery
• Maintain and supervise the Laboratory’s electronic inventory control system (WASP)
• Support pre‑analytic and post‑analytic functions of the Scientific Support Services section on a rotational basis, including specimen receipt/accessioning, media preparation/sterilization, Outfit Room logistics, and other support responsibilities

This role requires an energetic, organized, and adaptable individual who can ensure accurate inventory management and smooth support operations across the Laboratory.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Public Health Laboratory this class is accountable for assisting in the supervision of the Scientific Supportive Services section.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

• Assists in the supervision of the central scientific supportive services section by participating and maintaining lead responsibility for one or more of the following areas:
• sterilization and cleaning of all glassware used, sterilization of culture media and other materials used in the microbiological laboratories, and sterilization and disposal of infectious wastes;
• receipt, initial preparation and routing of specimen and samples for laboratory examinations;
• distribution of collection outfits to physicians and others for specified purposes;
• and preliminary processing of blood specimens for syphilis serology;
• Assists in maintaining inventory and ordering supplies;
• Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

• methods used for the sterilization of equipment, culture media and infectious material;

Minimum Qualifications – General Experience

Five (5) years of experience in a health, academic or diagnostic laboratory including experience in washing and sterilization of glassware, culture media preparation, and preparation and mailing of laboratory specimen containers.

Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at the level of Laboratory Assistant 2 or above.

Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed

College training in the biological or physical sciences may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience utilizing CORE-CT for requisitioning and receipt management of laboratory materials.
• Experience maintaining inventory control of laboratory consumables and equipment to include utilization of an electronic inventory management system.
• Experience leading, training and evaluating others in the responsibilities related to Scientific Support Services to include: Specimen receipt/accessioning, Media preparation/sterilization, Outfit Room logistics and Central Stores responsibilities.
• Experience with current quality control measures required for the various sections of Scientific Support Services.
• Experience with laboratory inventory and procurement processes, including consumable reagents and supplies, preventive maintenance, service contracts, asset management, and grant versus state funding streams.

WORKING CONDITIONS

May occasionally be required to lift standard laboratory equipment and/or trays/boxes of glassware; may be exposed to some risk of injury from such hazards as rabid animals, broken glass, toxic vapors, and toxic and/or disease-carrying substances; may be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions.
