I. Position Overview
The Vice President of R&D serves as the central leader for the company’s technological innovation and product development efforts. This role holds comprehensive responsibility for the development of new products, the formulation of technical strategies, the building and management of R&D teams, as well as the execution and quality control of R&D projects. This position directly impacts the company’s technological competitiveness and market leadership.
II. Key Responsibilities
R&D Strategic Planning
Formulate the company’s medium-to-long-term technical and R&D strategies to support business growth objectives.
Evaluate technology trends and industry developments, and propose recommendations for technological innovation.
R&D Project Management
Assume full responsibility for the execution of projects involving new product development and the optimization of existing products.
Ensure that R&D projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
Manage the allocation of R&D resources, including personnel, equipment, and budget.
R&D Team Building and Management
Recruit, develop, and manage a high-performance R&D team.
Establish team performance evaluation metrics, incentive programs, and career development plans.
Foster cross-functional collaboration and knowledge sharing within the team.
Product and Technological Innovation
Drive technological innovation, patent applications, and the development of new technologies.
Collaborate with Marketing, Product Management, and Operations departments to ensure products meet customer needs.
Monitor competitors’ technological activities and industry standards.
R&D Processes and Quality Control
Establish R&D process standards, quality management systems, and risk management mechanisms.
Ensure that R&D deliverables comply with relevant industry regulations, standards, and safety specifications.
Budgeting and Cost Control
Develop the R&D budget, control R&D costs, and optimize resource utilization.
Evaluate the Return on Investment (ROI) of R&D initiatives to support corporate decision-making.
Cross-Functional Communication and Reporting
Report R&D progress and technical strategies to the CEO or CTO.
Collaborate with departments such as Marketing, Production, and Supply Chain to ensure successful product launches.
III. Job Requirements
Educational Background
Master’s degree or higher in a relevant science or engineering discipline (e.g., Bioengineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Computer Science, Electronics, etc.).
A Ph.D. is preferred.
Work Experience
Over 20 years of experience in R&D, with at least 5 years of experience in an executive or senior management role.
Proven experience in managing large-scale projects or leading multinational R&D teams.
Skills and Competencies
Profound expertise in R&D management processes and technological innovation methodologies.
Exceptional strategic thinking, leadership, and decision-making skills.
Strong capabilities in cross-functional communication and team management.
Familiarity with industry standards, regulations, and intellectual property (IP) management.
