Are you passionate about the management and development of natural resources? Do you understand that water is one of our most valuable and important resources? If you want to be part of a dedicated and talented team that works to responsibly manage North Dakota’s water resources for a resilient future – then this employment opportunity might be for you. The Department of Water Resources (DWR) is looking for a Construction Crew Lead to serve the citizens of our state as a part of Team ND.
DWR offers rewarding work opportunities with a competitive employee benefits package including fully paid family health insurance plan, paid annual and sick leave, excellent retirement plan options, volunteer insurance options, a flexible work schedule, and more! The State of ND offers 40 hours of new hire leave at the beginning of employment, in addition to standard monthly leave accruals. Team members who were previously employed with a state agency and are eligible for reinstatement, as defined in NDAC 4-07-05-01.1, or who are granted an interagency transfer are not eligible for new hire leave.
Summary of Work
The Construction Crew Lead will oversee the DWR’s Construction Crew, currently consisting of two full-time employees, and provides leadership for field-based construction, repair, and maintenance activities supporting water infrastructure in North Dakota. This position plays a key role in coordinating field operations across projects and program areas, working closely with the Design and Construction Section within the Water Development Division and collaborating with other divisions as needed to support agency priorities.
The Design and Construction Section completes repairs and modifications to infrastructure owned by DWR, water infrastructure owned by other state agencies and federal government, and supports other water infrastructure within the state as needed.
Examples of projects completed by the Section include: modifications to the principal spillway at Belfield Dam, repair of the principal spillway at Blacktail Dam, replacement of the low-level valve actuator at Mt. Carmel Dam and Fish Creek dams, repair of the trash rack at Square Butte dam, repairs to USGS gage sites, and repairs to project features on the state-owned Devils Lake Outlets. The Crew also helps with emergency flood response and occasionally the inspection of dams. Frequent overnight travel is expected during construction season, typically 3 nights per week (four 10+ hour days Monday through Thursday and sometimes Friday).
