The Manufacturing Engineering Technician supports production by combining hands-on mechanical troubleshooting with continuous improvement initiatives. This role focuses on optimizing manufacturing processes, improving efficiency, and ensuring reliable operation of equipment and tooling in a clean, modern, and highly collaborative production environment.
Responsibilities
Allocate approximately 60% of time to continuous improvement activities and 40% to mechanical troubleshooting on the production floor.
Provide day-to-day hands-on support on the production floor by assisting with troubleshooting and process improvements.
Assist engineers with process setup, optimization, and documentation for coil fabrication, brazing, welding, and assembly processes.
Build, modify, and maintain tooling, fixtures, and workstations to improve production efficiency and consistency.
Create and update work instructions, visual aids, and standard operating procedures to ensure clear and accurate process documentation.
Support new product introductions by assisting with proto@type and production builds, process validation, and related documentation.
Perform time studies, collect production data, and conduct basic analysis to identify opportunities for process improvement.
Work closely with production, quality, and maintenance teams to address production issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
Assist with equipment setup, changeovers, and minor troubleshooting or repairs to minimize downtime.
Participate actively in continuous improvement initiatives, including 5S, lean manufacturing activities, and waste reduction projects.
Ensure adherence to safety, quality, and operational standards in all production and engineering support activities.
Essential Skills
3-5 years of experience in a process manufacturing environment.
Hands-on mechanical troubleshooting experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
Experience supporting manufacturing engineering or process engineering activities.
Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement practices.
Ability to perform process improvement work, including process flow analysis and process mapping.
Experience with or exposure to 5S, waste reduction, and related lean initiatives.
Ability to assist with process setup and optimization for operations such as coil fabrication, brazing, welding, and assembly.
Capability to build, modify, and maintain tooling, fixtures, and workstations.
Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of mechanical engineering concepts as applied in manufacturing.
Ability to create and maintain clear work instructions, visual aids, and standard operating procedures.
Competence in collecting and analyzing basic production data and conducting time studies.
Collaborative mindset with the ability to work closely with production, quality, and maintenance teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Background or training in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
Experience in process engineering and process optimization in a manufacturing environment.
Familiarity with Six Sigma or similar structured problem-solving methodologies.
Experience supporting new product introductions, including process validation and documentation.
Comfort working in both continuous improvement and hands-on troubleshooting capacities.
Work Environment
The role is based in a very clean, climate-controlled manufacturing facility that supports welding operations at the back of the plant, with product flow toward the front for final processing and shipment. The organization offers both day shift and second shift opportunities, with current hiring needs for a 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. second shift as well as a day shift, with multiple openings on each. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of North Chesterfield, VA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 – $35.00/hr.
