About Kobalt Labs

Kobalt Labs is a Series A AI startup operating in fintech and compliance, scaling rapidly from $1M to $2M ARR in under two months. The team is extremely small and high caliber, with engineers from Meta, Affirm, and prior founding CTO backgrounds. The culture is flat, fast-moving, and product-driven, with engineers directly interacting with customers and owning roadmap decisions.

The Role

This is a staff-level full-stack role with near-founder level ownership. Engineers are expected to operate across product, infrastructure, and customer interaction, building systems that are both scalable and actively used.

There are multiple focus areas within the role:

• Vendor Risk Management (frontend-leaning): Own and build the frontend experience using React and Next.js for compliance workflows
• Marketing Compliance (backend-leaning): Own backend systems including APIs, pipelines, and infrastructure using Python and FastAPI
• Marketing Compliance (ML focus): Build models, evaluation frameworks, and AI pipelines powering automated compliance systems

What You’ll Do

• Build and ship full-stack features across Python, FastAPI, React, and Next.js
• Work directly with customers weekly, translating feedback into scalable product improvements
• Drive roadmap decisions based on product vision and customer insight
• Design systems that are scalable, extensible, and production-ready
• Contribute to architecture and technical direction alongside founding team
• Lead expansion into new product areas as the company grows

What We’re Looking For

• 4 to 7 years of full-stack engineering experience with staff-level thinking
• Strong backend experience with Python and FastAPI
• Strong frontend experience with React and Next.js
• Proven experience building products that are actively used in production
• Infrastructure or systems-level thinking across full-stack environments
• Comfort working with modern AI tools and workflows
• High ownership and ability to operate without structure
• Ability to work directly with customers and extract meaningful product signals
• Must be based in or willing to relocate to New York City and work onsite
