Director, Engineering – Avalara Developer Experience Platform Full Time NEW

This leadership role sits at the intersection of developer experience, platform engineering, and AI-driven integration enablement. You will be responsible for shaping how external developers and AI agents discover, understand, and integrate with complex API ecosystems at scale. The role focuses on building a seamless, intelligent, and highly consistent developer experience layer that spans documentation, tooling, sandbox environments, and agent-ready interfaces. You will collaborate closely with API product engineering and partner-facing teams to ensure all capabilities are exposed in a usable, standardized, and scalable way. This is a high-impact position requiring both strategic vision and hands-on execution in a fast-evolving AI-first environment. Accountabilities

• Own and evolve the external developer experience platform, including MCP-based interfaces, tool catalogs, and agent-facing integration layers.
• Define standards and best practices for exposing APIs and services to AI agents, ensuring consistency, usability, and scalability across systems.
• Lead the design and improvement of developer portals, documentation systems, and knowledge experiences, ensuring accuracy, automation, and ease of navigation.
• Build and maintain interactive sandbox environments, API testing tools, and simulation systems to support safe experimentation for developers and agents.
• Develop reference implementations, sample applications, and AI-driven integration kits that accelerate onboarding and integration success.
• Drive AI-powered workflows and reusable integration “skills” that reduce time-to-integration and improve developer productivity.
• Establish DX standards across teams, including API design, documentation quality, versioning, and deprecation practices.
• Lead partner enablement efforts, improving onboarding journeys and integration success across the broader ecosystem.
• Define and monitor key developer experience metrics such as integration success rate and time-to-first-success, using insights to continuously improve the platform.

Requirements

• 12+ years of experience in software engineering, developer platforms, API ecosystems, or developer experience leadership roles.
• Proven experience building or scaling external developer platforms, partner ecosystems, or integration-heavy products.
• Strong technical background with deep understanding of API design, system architecture, and developer workflows.
• Demonstrated experience working with AI, LLMs, or agent-based systems and their application in developer tooling or platforms.
• Strong product and platform thinking with the ability to translate complex systems into intuitive developer experiences.
• Excellent cross-functional influence and collaboration skills, with experience driving alignment across multiple engineering and product teams.
• Strong analytical and data-driven mindset with experience defining and tracking platform and developer success metrics.
• Hands-on leadership style with a bias toward execution, experimentation, and continuous improvement.
• Curiosity, ownership mindset, and a strong focus on developer and customer success.
